What it Means to be a Proverbs 31 Woman

When you hear the phrase “Proverbs 31 woman,” what comes to mind?
For a long time, I had heard about the Proverbs 31 woman. I knew the passage was often used to describe what a godly woman should look like, but honestly, I wanted to take a closer look for myself.
So I decided to actually study her. Not just to look at everything she does and try to figure out how I could become more like her, but to ask: What can I really learn from this woman? What does this passage actually show us about the kind of woman God is calling us to be?
Proverbs 31 gives us a picture of a woman whose life is marked by character, wisdom, strength, generosity, diligence, and—most importantly—a reverence for God.
So today, I want to share three qualities from Proverbs 31 that stood out to me and that I think are especially worth paying attention to.
1. She Fears the Lord
Before we get into everything the Proverbs 31 woman does, we have to look at who she is ultimately rooted in.
Proverbs 31:30 says:
“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.”
That verse is important because it gives us perspective on everything else in the passage. Her worth isn't ultimately found in how productive she is. It's not found in how much she accomplishes, how well she takes care of everyone else, how successful she is, or even how other people view her.
She fears the Lord.
To fear God doesn't mean that we're constantly terrified of Him. It means we recognize who He is. We respect His authority, take His Word seriously, and allow our relationship with Him to influence the way we live.
And I think this is something we can easily lose sight of.
We can spend so much time asking:
What does everyone else expect from me?
What should I be doing at this stage of my life?
What does a successful woman look like?
What do I need to accomplish?
But the Proverbs 31 woman gives us a different question:
What does God want from me?
Her relationship with God comes before the checklist. And that's important because you can be incredibly productive and still not be growing spiritually.
You can accomplish a lot and still be far from God.
You can look like you have everything together and still have a heart that isn't surrendered to Him.
So before asking, “How can I become a Proverbs 31 woman?” maybe we should start with:
“Am I becoming a woman who fears the Lord?”
Because everything else flows from there.
2. She Is Trustworthy
Proverbs 31:11–12 says:
“Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.”
The immediate context is her relationship with her husband, but I think there's a broader character quality here that we can learn from: she is trustworthy.
She's the kind of woman whose character can be trusted. And trust isn't built through one big moment.
It's built through consistency.
It's following through.
It's being honest.
It's keeping your word.
It's taking responsibility when you've made a mistake.
It's being the same person when nobody is watching as you are when everyone is watching.
And I think this is a really good area for self-reflection.
Can people trust my yes?
Can they trust my no?
Can I be honest about what I can actually handle?
Do I take responsibility when I'm wrong?
Do people feel safe being honest with me?
Being trustworthy doesn't mean you'll never make a mistake. It means that when you do make a mistake, you're willing to acknowledge it.
You can say, “I was wrong.”
You can say, “I'm sorry.”
You can make things right.
You don't have to be perfect to be trustworthy.
In fact, sometimes taking responsibility for our imperfections is part of what makes us trustworthy. And being trustworthy also means being careful with what people entrust to us. That includes their confidence, their vulnerability, their time, their resources, and even the responsibilities God has placed in our hands.
I also think it's important to understand that being trustworthy doesn't mean being available to everyone all the time. Sometimes an honest no is more trustworthy than a yes you can't actually follow through on.
You don't have to promise more than you can give just to make people happy. A trustworthy woman understands her limits and is honest about them.
3. She Is Diligent
One of the things that stands out immediately in Proverbs 31 is how hard this woman works.
Proverbs 31:13 says that she “works with eager hands,” and throughout the passage we see her making plans, purchasing a field, planting a vineyard, creating goods, selling what she makes, providing for her household, and paying attention to what is happening around her.
But I don't think the lesson is simply:
“A godly woman needs to be busy all the time.”
That's not the point.
The quality I see here is diligence.
She's willing to work with what God has placed in her hands.
She's proactive.
She's resourceful.
She takes initiative.
Being a godly woman doesn't mean you have to follow one particular career path or have a certain lifestyle.
Maybe you're building a career.
Maybe you're raising children.
Maybe you're starting a business.
Maybe you're going back to school.
Maybe you're working on a creative project.
Maybe you're serving in your church.
Maybe you're simply trying to be faithful with the responsibilities you have in this season.
The question isn't, “Am I doing as much as the woman in Proverbs 31?”
The question is:
“What has God actually entrusted to me, and am I stewarding it well?”
Because busyness and diligence aren't the same thing. You can be busy all day and still spend your time on things that don't matter.
Diligence asks:
What matters?
What has God given me responsibility for?
What can I do faithfully with what I have right now?
And I think that's a much healthier way to look at this passage.
The Proverbs 31 woman isn't impressive because she does everything.
She's impressive because of who she is.
Her diligence is an expression of her character, not a way to prove her worth.
Becoming Before Doing
When I read Proverbs 31 this way, I think it changes how we approach the entire passage.
Instead of looking at it and thinking:
“I need to do more.”
We can start asking:
“Who am I becoming?”
Am I becoming a woman who fears the Lord?
Am I becoming someone people can trust?
Am I learning to be diligent and faithful with what God has placed in my hands?
Those questions get to the heart of Proverbs 31.
And these are only three of the qualities we can learn from this passage.
In my full YouTube video, I talk about six qualities of a Proverbs 31 woman, including generosity, not being controlled by fear, and having wisdom.

My hope is that we don't read Proverbs 31 and walk away feeling like we're failing to measure up.
Instead, I hope it encourages us to keep growing.
Because becoming a Proverbs 31 woman isn't about becoming perfect.
It's about becoming rooted in God and faithfully growing into the woman He is calling us to be. 🌿
