Tame Your Thoughts Book Review

Our thoughts have a lot more influence on us than we sometimes realize. The things we repeatedly think about can shape how we see ourselves, our circumstances, and even our relationship with God. That’s the idea at the heart of Max Lucado’s Tame Your Thoughts, a book about learning to recognize unhealthy thought patterns and replace them with thoughts grounded in truth.

Lucado draws from Scripture to explore how we can become more intentional about what we allow to take up space in our minds. Rather than pretending negative thoughts don’t exist, the book encourages us to bring them to God and learn a healthier, more Christ-centered way of thinking.

In the meantime here are 3 things I loved about the book:

  1. The strategies are straightforward and doable.

I've read books where the concepts seem way too abstract or too strict. If it's too abstract, I can't follow it and if it's too strict, I feel stressed when I don't get it right. This book was just right! Max explains each concept clearly and provides multiple examples on how to apply them in real life situations.

  2. The strategies relate to Scripture.

If I'm going to apply anything to my life, I'm at a point where it needs to come from the Bible. I know that if it's God approved, I want it in my life.

  3. The recent time examples that were given in the book.

Max gave great examples of how people from the Bible use the tactics he provided but the examples he provided from more recent times really brought it home for me. He demonstrated how war veterans, presidents, and even people in his life realize how important it is to take charge of your thoughts. It was truly remarkable to see people from all walks of life have a general consensus that our thinking matters more than we realize.

If you've been struggling with overthinking, anxiety, low confidence, or anything of the sort, I highly recommend this book. Honestly, I recommend the author (he's my favorite!). If you need a little more persuading, check out my video where I go a little more in detail with what else I like about the book and who the book is really for!
